RSS feeds from Food Science Central

What is RSS?

RSS stands for 'Rich Site Summary' and 'Really Simple Syndication', and is a relatively new XML-based technology for alerting users to new content on web sites. Support for RSS is a feature of some modern web browsers and email clients; there are also websites that allow you to keep track of RSS news feeds. There is a useful background article on RSS at the Wikipedia web site - see here.

Why would I want to use RSS?

An RSS news feed will keep you up to date with new content added to Food Science Central or to the Food Science and Technology Bulletin: Functional Foods, and to new product and service announcements from IFIS Publishing. New additions to these areas are flagged as soon as they are published and use of RSS takes the load off your email inbox.

How do I use RSS news feeds?

Once you have subscribed to an RSS news feed (see below), your news feed reader will alert you when there is a new item on your selected feeds. Usually you will see a short summary of the new article and, depending on the reader you use, you can either open the selected article directly in your web browser or in a pane of your news reader.

Do I need to register on Food Science Central to set up an RSS feed from the site?

It's not essential as you will be able to receive an RSS feed and see what's been added to the site even if you are not a site registrant. We would recommend registration however as it will allow you to access all articles of interest to you through your newsreader or web browser - as without registration only those articles etc. made available to guest users of the site will be available to you.

Which RSS news reader should I use?

Any reader you feel comfortable with. The Food Science Central news feeds conform to the RSS 2.0 standard, and are compatible with any reader that supports this standard. If you do not have a preferred reader already you may wish to consider:

  • Firefox - version 1.0 of this web browser supports RSS through 'live bookmarks'; there's more on Firefox here.

  • Thunderbird - version 1.0 of this email and news reading client supports RSS; there's more on Thunderbird here.

  • Bloglines - this web site enables you to track RSS news feeds under the 'My Feeds' tab; there's more on Bloglines here.

  • My Yahoo - The personalization features of the Yahoo web site allow users to add RSS feeds; there's more on My Yahoo here.

How do I subscribe to an RSS news feed on Food Science Central?

Exact instructions will depend on the news reader you use, and the reader's documentation will provide step-by-step instructions.

In general:

At the top right of this page there is a list of news feeds currently available at Food Science Central.

Right-click on the name of the news feed that is of interest and select 'Copy shortcut' (or 'Copy link location' if you use Firefox). Alternatively, you can click on the link to view the XML code and copy the URL of the news feed from the address bar of your browser.

Paste this URL into the appropriate part of your reader's software (there will usually be a place where you are required to enter the news feed's URL).
