News headline archive

The news headline archive is a searchable database of food science-related headlines that have appeared on Food Science Central. It is available to Registered users of the website.

To access the archive, please click here.

Tips for using the news headline archive

You can search the news headline archive either by date or term. Searching by date and by term can also be used together to search for a specific search term within a certain date range.

Search by date

You can search the headline archive by specifying a date range using the calendar tool at the top left of the page. Click on the '>' symbol to scroll forward on each of the calendar's months and '<' to scroll back.

For example, if you would like to see headlines from 1st June to 31st July 2005, click on the '<' symbol in the dark blue bar of the calendar labelled 'From:' so that June is selected. After this, click '1' on the calendar to specify your start date. Do the same for the calendar labelled 'To:', selecting July and then '31'. The most recent results will appear at the top of the screen.

If you do not select any dates, the default date range will consist of one week previous to today's date.

Search by term

You can also search the archive by inputting terms into the search box followed by clicking the 'enter' button or by clicking 'search'. Clicking on 'clear' will clear the search box.

Listed below are some pointers to help you get the best results from searching the archive:

  • The system searches on either word or phrase fragments, e.g. bse finds headlines with 'BSE' and with 'Observer'. A space character can be used to help refine searches. For example, inputting land<space> (where <space> is a single space) will exclude records including words such as landing, landed, but will continue to find terms such as farmland, Poland

  • Wildcards (e.g. '?' or '*') are not supported, although searching on health will find terms such as healthy, healthier, unhealthy

  • Searching is case insensitive

  • Searches will be performed on the Originator field as well as article title

  • Valid alphanumeric characters are a-z, A-Z, 0-9, - and <space>

  • No Boolean logic is supported

Navigating news headline archive pages

Clicking on the title of a headline leads to the full text of the article itself (unless access is dependent on registration or subscription), while clicking on article sources in the Originator column links to that originator's website. You can scroll through the pages of search results by clicking on the page numbers found in the dark blue bar which is above the results page. Clicking on the dotted lines which follow page numbers will take you to the next page of results. Clicking on the dotted lines which precede page numbers will take you to the previous page of results.

Sorting pages

Results are sorted by date by default, with newest items appearing first.

Clicking on the 'Date' heading will reverse the date sort so that the oldest items within the date range/term selected will appear first.

Clicking on 'Title' will sort items alphabetically by headline title. Clicking on 'Title' a second time will reverse the alphabetical order of results.

Clicking on 'Originator' will sort the results alphabetically by source of news story.
