How viable are probiotic bacteria in yoghurts?

Oxygen toxicity has been suggested as a cause of the poor viability of probiotic bacteria in yoghurts. However, yoghurts packaged in oxygen resistant and oxygen-scavenging material showed no difference in viability compared with controls, suggesting that oxygen alone is not a significant factor in causing poor viability.
